bio
John Carpenter is an artist, designer and educator who uses software to explore complex data and spaces. Based in Los Angeles, he works for HRL Laboratories on the visualization of quantum related technologies, and is a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts. He earned his MFA from the department of Design Media Arts at UCLA (2009), and has exhibited his art and design work internationally.

Prior to joining HRL, John worked at Oblong Industries prototyping gesture-based, interactive, real-time, immersive visualizations and interfaces for clients including IBM Watson. At Morphosis Architects, John developed interactive models for exploring architectural systems and complex geometries (2005-2011) and consulted with creative technology companies including Synthesis Technology Integration. John was a designer at the California Institute of Technology's Brain and Biological Imaging Centers (2001-2005), and he graduated from the University of Arizona with a BS in Molecular + Cellular Biology and minors in Studio Art and Psychology (2001).
