John Carpenter is an artist, designer and educator who uses software to generate interactive experiences and digital narratives. His recent work focuses on the use of gesture to explore complex data, spaces, and technologies in large-scale immersive environments. Based in Los Angeles, he works for Oblong Industries as a Lead Interaction Designer and Software Engineer and is a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts (Media Arts + Practice). John regularly gives talks on the intersection of art, science, design + technology and has installed his art and design work internationally. He earned his MFA from the department of Design Media Arts at UCLA with his thesis qualitative spaces in interactive art + design (2009).
Prior to joining Oblong, John worked at Morphosis Architects and consulted with creative technology companies including Synthesis Technology Integration. John was a designer at the California Institute of Technology's Brain and Biological Imaging Centers, and he graduated from the University of Arizona in 2001 with a BS in Molecular + Cellular Biology and minors in Studio Art and Psychology.
